The quickest way to get from Britomart Transport Centre to Auckland Airport (AKL) is by taxi, which costs less than 100 NZ$ and takes about 25 minutes.

Britomart Transport Centre

In Auckland's core business center, Britomart Transport Centre, or Britomart train station, serves as the northern terminus of the North Island Main Trunk rail line.

Expansive modernist architectural elements were added to a historic Edwardian post office to create a train station with a bus interchange.

Located immediately across Quay Street from Auckland's major ferry port, Queen Street is the city's principal commercial avenue.

The center culminated in multiple design revisions, some significantly larger, including an underground bus terminal and a massive underground car park. Those ideas were scuttled due to political and financial concerns.

A significant transit project for Auckland when it first began construction early in this decade was to bring rail access closer to the city's central business district and increase the city's everyday public transportation use.

There are just a handful of subterranean railway stations in the world that were built to accommodate diesel trains, even though they are currently outlawed. A connecting bus takes passengers from The Strand station to Britomart, where they may take diesel trains from Hamilton and Wellington.

In the past, it was deemed a failure because of the low use and high expense. Still, now it is recognized as a massive success because of the increasing use of rail transportation.

The primary factor limiting increased traffic is the lack of a thorough connection to the North Shore or the Western line via a tunnel, which would have transformed the station into a through the station.

Work has begun on a tunnel connecting the City Rail Link to the Western Line. Waitemata railway station has been renamed by Auckland Transport and Auckland Council in a joint submission to the New Zealand Geographic Board.

Buses and Ferries Connection

There are many modes of transportation at Britomart. Numerous bus routes end here, including the SkyBus service between Auckland Airport and the city's northern suburbs and the Northern Express NX1 route between Albany and the Hibiscus Coast.

On Queen and Customs Streets, the CityLink bus runs frequently, and the InnerLink bus stops at Britomart.

Buses departing from nearby stops, some of which are as far away as a block from the station, are also available.

Queen Street was used for bus arrivals and departures until early 2016. However, that section of Queen Street has since been permanently blocked from vehicular traffic. A brief closure for CRL digging has resulted in the area being reopened as a public plaza.

A vital node in Auckland's ferry network can be found directly across Quay Street from the station. Waiheke Island and Rangitoto Island in the Hauraki Gulf are accessible via ferry from Devonport, Birkenhead, and Half Moon Bay neighborhoods.
